The White House has revealed that North Korean soldiers fighting on Russia’s side in the ongoing Ukraine war are being sent into “human wave” assaults, with many meeting their deaths in futile attacks.
National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed reports from South Korea, estimating that around 1,000 North Korean troops were killed or wounded within a week in the Kursk region, where Ukraine launched a surprise incursion in August.
Kirby stated that the tactics employed by North Korean commanders—mass dismounted assaults on Ukrainian positions—have proven ineffective, resulting in heavy casualties.
“We now assess that North Korean forces are conducting massed dismounted assaults against Ukrainian positions in Kursk, and these human wave tactics haven’t really been all that effective,” Kirby said.
“They’ve resulted in heavy casualties for these North Korean forces. We estimate that, to date, they have suffered more than 1,000 killed or wounded in just the past week.”
The troops, sent by Pyongyang to support Russia’s invasion, are reportedly so terrified of capture that some have resorted to suicide rather than face being taken prisoner.
“Terrified troops sent by Pyongyang to boost Russia’s invasion of its Western-friendly neighbor are committing suicide rather than risking capture,” Kirby added.
North Korea has deployed thousands of soldiers to reinforce Russian forces in the conflict, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has estimated that nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded since their involvement began.
