Bomb squad carries out controlled burn of explosive chemicals found in St Leonards home | UK News

The bomb squad has carried out a controlled burn of explosive chemicals found at a seafront home in Sussex.

A major incident was declared and 73 people evacuated from their homes after explosives and 500 canisters containing more unknown chemicals were discovered at a house in St Leonards, near Hastings.

The additional 500 canisters are not thought to be explosive, although they will be tested by specialists.

A 100m cordon has been put in place and it is not known when occupants will be allowed to return home, or if the Hastings Half Marathon will take place on Sunday as planned.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of producing illegal substances and making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.

He has been detained under the Mental Health Act while inquiries continue.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said “significant progress” had been made in making the chemicals safe.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team successfully removed the desensitised chemicals from the house and carried out a controlled burn in a skip near the sea wall on Saturday morning.

“Searches by EOD are continuing this morning for any other hazardous materials in the house, to ensure the house is clear of explosive material and the area is safe.”

Chief Inspector James Scott said everyone was “working hard to resolve the incident as swiftly as possible”.

“We appreciate everyone’s support and ongoing patience. We know this has been incredibly disruptive,” he added.

“Investigations are ongoing however, from evidence gathered so far, there is no indication that the 28-year-old man arrested intended to cause harm either to himself of anybody else.”

A decision on the half marathon is expected around 4pm today.
