Bushra explains why Atiqa declined ‘KMKT’

On Tuesday, veteran actor Bushra Ansari appeared on a private channel’s Ramazan transmission, hosted by Javeria Saud. During the show, the actor addressed fellow actress Atiqa Odho’s decision to decline the role of Fahad Mustafa’s mother in the popular drama series Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum (KMKT), which was then played by Ansari herself. Odho had previously cited age considerations as her reason for turning down the role, stating that it was more suitable for someone older.

When Saud asked, “I don’t know if I should mention it or not, but Atiqa Odho once said that she refused the KMKT role because she didn’t want to play Fahad Mustafa’s mother as she is younger for that character. What are your thoughts on it?” Ansari replied, “She is younger than me, no doubt about it. However, someone also told me that she already played Fawad (Khan)’s mother years ago. I think she just mentioned it casually because she had an issue related to dates.”

She also shared a humorous exchange with Fahad, saying, “Perhaps Fahad Mustafa proposed to act with me. I often tease Fahad, saying, ‘You matched the mother’s character with one sibling and the father’s character with the others.'” She added that Fahad had already informed his team, saying, “I already told the team that I want Javed Sheikh and Bushra Ansari for the parents’ roles in Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum.”

This is not the first time Ansari has commented on age-appropriate casting in relation to Odho. Last year, during an appearance on a private channel’s talk show, Odho expressed her disappointment at not being offered roles in director Badar Mehmood’s dramas. Mehmood revealed that he had approached Odho for the role of Mustafa’s mother in KMKT, but she declined due to her busy schedule and age considerations. Odho explained, “I think Bushra is a little older also, so the role suits her better.”

Responding to Odho’s remarks, Ansari appeared on Faysal Quraishi’s podcast Pressure Buhat Hai and shared her perspective on playing maternal roles. She recalled, “At my time, actresses were reluctant to play the character of mothers; I played Touqeer Nasir’s mother in ’86, but there were actors who refused to play that character.” Ansari emphasised her willingness to embrace diverse roles, stating, “We are always excited about our characters. I played Rahat Kazmi’s grandmother.”

During the same podcast, regarding KMKT’s success, Ansari credited the realistic script and relatable storyline. She remarked, “All the actors, cast, and crew were perfect, but the credit still goes to the writer and director for crafting a common household’s story beautifully.”
