Carney’s Liberals win Canada election, set to form minority govt: CTV

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won enough seats to form a minority government in Canada’s 45th federal election, according to CTV News projections late Monday.

As of 11 p.m. EDT, Liberals were elected or leading in 156 of the House of Commons’ 343 ridings, short of the 172 needed for a majority.

The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, was trailing with 144 seats. Minority governments in Canada typically last around two-and-a-half years.

Carney, a former central bank governor, took over leadership of the Liberals in March following the resignation of Justin Trudeau.

His campaign focused on economic management and confronting escalating tariff threats from US President Donald Trump, whose comments about annexing Canada fueled a surge of nationalism that benefited the Liberals.

The election result extends the Liberal Party’s hold on government, which began with Trudeau’s majority win in 2015. Carney’s victory was also seen as a setback for Poilievre, the fourth consecutive Conservative leader to lose to the Liberals.

Carney, 60, won his Ottawa-area Nepean riding, while Poilievre retained his seat in neighboring Carleton.

The Liberals are now tasked with finding support from opposition parties to pass legislation in a divided Parliament, where the New Democratic Party and Bloc Québécois also saw losses.

Record turnout was reported during advance polling, with 7.3 million Canadians voting early.

Carney, who previously served as governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, campaigned on his economic experience, contrasting himself with Poilievre’s promises to overhaul domestic policies amid affordability concerns.

Neither Carney nor Poilievre immediately responded to the election night projections.
