Consumers likely to get 50 paisa per unit discount: NEPRA
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed its hearing on tariff revision requests from seven Independent Power Producers (IPPs). If approved, this adjustment could provide consumers with a relief of 50 paisa per unit, potentially resulting in overall savings of Rs. 920 billion.
The hearing addressed requests submitted by seven IPPs operating under the 2002 power policy, including Nishat Chunian Power, Nishat Power, Narowal Energy Limited, Liberty Power Tech Limited, Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited, Sapphire Electric Power Limited, and Saif Power Limited. The proposals aimed at reducing power generation costs.
Discussions focused on key issues such as the exchange rate adjustment mechanism, the payment system under the “Take or Pay” model, and insurance cap regulations. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) informed NEPRA that agreements with these IPPs had been finalized, with the companies waiving over Rs. 11 billion in late payment surcharges.
As a result of these negotiations, electricity tariffs could be reduced by 50 paisa per unit. NEPRA has concluded the hearing and is expected to announce its final decision soon.
