DOCTOR Who fans were in uproar slammed a storyline twist upon the show’s return.
The popular BBC sci-fi series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the titular Time Lord, back for his second outing.
Viewers watched as the Doctor was joined by new companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu).
But some weren’t happy about storyline involving Alan Budd (Jonny Green), Belinda’s ex turned dictator – in which the Doctor played a supporting role.
One fan wrote on X: “When a show is on the verge of a potential cancellation, the first episode needs to be a banger… and The Robot’s Revolution just wasn’t it.
“Hit and miss jokes in a forgettable story that badly mishandles its incel twist – see Adolescence on how to do it well.”
Another penned: “#DoctorWho no longer for me. No idea what I’ve just watched.”
While a third chimed in: “#DoctorWho #TheRobotRevolution was a fun ride and Varada Sethu is a great addition to the TARDIS.
“But parts of it were frustratingly undercooked, especially the eye-rolling “Planets of the Incels” reveal.
“A very RTD season opener for better and worse!”
After she turned down his proposal, Alan carried out a disturbing way of winning Belinda back.
He used future technology to dominate a planet named after her, forcing society into submission in the process.
In a dig at her ex’s controlling nature, Belinda branded it as a “planet of the incels”.
Merriam Webster defines an incel as “a person (usually a man) who regards himself or herself as being involuntarily celibate and typically expresses extreme resentment and hostility toward those who are sexually active.”
Meanwhile, the once-peaceful planet was severely distorted to fit Alan’s regime.
This included women being stripped of autonomy, socially engineered and monitored.
The Sun revealed earlier this year that Doctor Who was facing the axe with star Ncuti poised to quit.
An insider said: “Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him.
“His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work.
“The show has been poorly managed in recent years and there’s a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership.
“People warned some episodes were getting too caught up on an agenda rather than telling a story and those people got shouted down, ignored.”
Doctor Who airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
