The 4-mile-long motorway links the M60 ring road to Salford, bypassing the town of Eccles.

Highways North West said the works are being carried out to replace sections of the safety barrier for both the central reservation and along the roadside in both directions.

Running from January 21 to February 12, the works will run overnight from Monday to Friday, from 9pm to 5am between junctions two and three.

Works will also occasionally take place on Saturdays, running two hours longer until 7am on weekends.

While the motorway will remain open, each carriageway will be operating at a reduced capacity.

If there is congestion from the lane closures, drivers joining the motorway from the M60 can leave at junction 2 and follow the A576 and later the A6 to continue their journey into the city.

If you are aiming to travel south, follow the A576 and then the A6, heading east, before taking the A5063 south which will link you up to the eastern end of the M602 at junction 3.

An update from Highways North West read: “We’re carrying out essential safety barrier improvements on the M602 between junction 2 (Eccles) and 3 (Ordsall).

“Our work involves replacing sections of safety barrier in the central reservation and along the roadside in both directions.

“We’re keeping disruption to a minimum by working at night when traffic levels are lower and under lane closures.”

The update continued: “This means the motorway remains open but at a reduced capacity.

“Our work starts on Tuesday 21 January and is planned to finish on Wednesday 12 February 2025.

“We’ll work overnight Monday to Friday and occasionally Saturday, from 9pm to 5am (extended to 7am on weekends).”

Highways North West apologised for any noise disturbance from the works, saying: “The repairs aim to improve safety for drivers by reducing the risk of vehicle crossover.

“There’ll also be less disruption with not as much maintenance work or road closures needed in future.

“However, our work will create some noise.

“We’d like to apologise for any disturbance this may cause.”
