Heatwave alert issued for various parts of Pakistan
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Sindh, South Punjab, and Balochistan, forecasting scorching conditions from today until April 30.
According to the PMD, a high-pressure system will dominate the upper atmosphere starting today, intensifying heat across most parts of the country from tomorrow. Daytime temperatures in South Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan are projected to rise 5 to 7°C above average, while Islamabad, central and upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan may see increases of 4 to 6°C.
The PMD warned that the heatwave’s intensity is likely to persist until April 30, with relief expected from May 1 as westerly winds bring the possibility of rain and hail to parts of Kashmir, Islamabad, north-east Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
In response to the rising temperatures, the Punjab Education Department has announced summer vacations for schools starting June 1. Secretary School Education Punjab, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, told that vacations could be advanced by a week if the heatwave worsens significantly.
The extreme weather comes amid growing concerns over climate change, with Pakistan ranked among the most vulnerable countries to its impacts. Experts note that global warming is driving rapid weather shifts, increasing the frequency of natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes worldwide.
The PMD urged the public to take precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure, as the nation braces for the searing heat.
