Iconic shopping centre announces its closure after 16 years as ‘ghost town’ fears grow

Located in Fareham Shopping Centre, Portsmouth, the owner of The Canvas Printing Company has revealed the reasons behind the closure.

As online shopping has risen, footfall has declined meaning that staff costs and business rates cannot be managed.

The owner of the store took to social media to thanks all current and former patrons.

Nick Stockdale said: “We want to thank each and every one of you for your support, loyalty, and the countless smiles you’ve brought to our shop over the years.

“Fareham will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

The store was a go-to for those looking for prints, photo restoration and framing service.

Despite the closure, the chain will continue to trade online and the Portsmouth site will remain open.

Those hoping to shop in-person could head to the location in Cascades Shopping Centre.

Many have responded to the news by expressing their “sadness”.

One Facebook user wrote: “Such a shame, I have some amazing canvasses from them.”

Another put: “I used them last week and was really impressed with the price and friendly, prompt and helpful service.”

Someone else said: “My Mum loved these guys when she worked out side the centre they would bring her a hot chocolate and always made her smile before she passed.

“Sad for them but I guess the cost is just on the rise.”

A fourth wrote: “Another ghost town coming up.

“Fareham was so busy when I first moved here nearly 20 years ago.”

Whilst another commented: “The rents in and around Fareham shopping centre are fat too high, lower them and then more shops will return.”

As various locations across the region have shut, Fareham Borough Council revealed its plans for the future.

The Fareham Town Centre Regeneration Strategy hopes to restore the high street to its former glory.

With millions of pounds being injected into the area, the local council leader spoke of “long-term” regeneration with plans having been in the works for “several years”.
