Magpies win Carabao Cup, first domestic trophy in 70 years

Newcastle United ended a 70-year wait for domestic silverware with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, securing their first major trophy since 1969.

Eddie Howe’s side delivered a performance worthy of the occasion, with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak ensuring their place in Newcastle folklore. The victory sparked wild celebrations among the Toon Army, marking the club’s first domestic triumph since lifting the FA Cup in 1955.

Burn, recently called up to the England squad, opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, rising highest to head home Kieran Trippier’s corner. The Magpies doubled their lead seven minutes after the restart when Isak reacted quickest to Jacob Murphy’s knockdown, finishing clinically past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Liverpool, reeling from their Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties days earlier, struggled to break down Newcastle’s disciplined defence. Substitute Federico Chiesa pulled one back in added time, setting up a tense finale, but Newcastle held firm to claim their long-awaited trophy.

The victory cements Howe’s status as a transformative figure at St James’ Park, with Newcastle’s resurgence under his leadership now rewarded with silverware. The club’s long-suffering supporters finally had their moment of glory, celebrating a night that will be remembered as the dawn of a new era on Tyneside.
