A massive fire that erupted early Saturday morning near an oil refinery in Karachi’s Korangi area continued to rage for more than 12 hours, according to rescue officials.
The fire broke out during a deep excavation at a site located 1,800 feet below ground. Seven fire brigade vehicles have been deployed to tackle the blaze, but authorities are still struggling to bring it under control.
According to a statement from the Korangi police also confirmed that the fire started while drilling for groundwater in the Korangi Creek area.
No casualties have been reported so far, and workers at the excavation site, along with nearby residents, have been evacuated to safety. However, the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, with authorities still investigating the incident.
The Edhi Foundation, a major charitable organization in Pakistan, confirmed that an ambulance and volunteers were at the scene, though no injuries have been reported.
Senior Superintendent of Police Tariq Nawaz, along with other officers, are present at the site. The police added that the intensity of the fire has been increasing, prompting the deployment of additional officers from nearby police stations.
Teams from the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) are also at the scene, assisting with the response.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tesori expressed concern over the ongoing fire, urging Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi to take swift action. The Governor emphasized the need for immediate measures to contain the fire and ensure that helicopters are made available if necessary.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
