Nigel Farage has offered up some surprising criticism to his ally Donald Trump over his Ukraine peace plan.
The US president wants Ukraine to formally cede the peninsula of Crimea, occupied by Russia since 2014, to secure an end to Vladimir Putin’s war.
But Kyiv has already rejected the idea, as Crimea is a legally recognised part of the country according to Ukraine’s constitution.
And now it appears the Reform UK leader – who has spoken at Trump rallies in the past and campaigned for the Republican to get into the White House – is siding with Ukraine over the president.
Speaking to GB News on Wednesday night, Farage said he wants “peace” in Ukraine but “not at any price”.
He said: “Wars end in one of two ways, don’t they, generally – one side gets annihilated, surrenders and accepts pretty much anything they’re given, or you have a negotiated peace settlement.
“You could argue the civil war in Northern Ireland was ended by both sides making some degree of concessions.
“I don’t think this plan really is acceptable, because it just rewards Putin too much.
“I want to see peace, but not at any price.”
Farage’s interview was published shortly after Trump attacked Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not agreeing to the Crimea plan.
The US president claimed Zelenskyy had been “boasting” that Kyiv would never legally recognise Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian peninsula.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “It’s inflammatory statements like Zelenskyy’s that makes it so difficult to settle this War.
“He has nothing to boast about!
“The situation for Ukraine is dire — He can have Peace or, he can fight for another three years before losing the whole Country.”
The president later told reporters that Zelenskyy is “harder” to deal with than Putin, even though the US has been an ally to Ukraine throughout Putin’s invasion.
Farage’s pro-Ukraine stance on GB News is the latest example of how the Clacton MP is trying to distance himself from his long-term ally, who is hugely unpopular among Brits.
The Reform UK leader accused Trump of “giving far too much” to Putin in his peace negotiations last month, and previously described the US tariffs on international imports as “excessive”.
