Partial eclipse to be visible from UK on Saturday, Met Office says, with southerners set for best views | UK News

Stargazers could catch a glimpse of a partial solar eclipse this weekend, with those further south set for the clearest views.

The phenomenon – where the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and only partly obscures the star – is expected to be visible in the UK from 9.56am to 12.14pm on Saturday.

For Londoners, the peak of the eclipse is set to be at around 11.03am.

However, while it’s usually one of the best spots for viewing eclipses, northern Scotland is set for a cloudy and rainy morning.

Stephen Dixon, spokesman for the Met Office, said: “There’s patchy cloud around on Saturday in the South.

“The northwest of Scotland, which has the best window for seeing the partial solar eclipse, is unfortunately going to see rain and cloudy skies,” he said.

“However, those further south in England on Saturday should see some break in the cloud.”

It comes after the Northern Lights were seen above Whitley Bay, in Tyne and Wear, early on Wednesday, where skies remained clear.

Wetter conditions are set to move into the UK towards the end of the week, with rain forecast in Scotland and the west of Northern Ireland for Thursday.

Lighter bursts of rainfall are also set to move southeast toward England into Friday morning, with the afternoon bringing sunny showers across much of the South and parts of Wales.

Conditions should clear up in England over the weekend, with temperatures up to 17C in the South East and 14C in the North on Sunday.

Mr Dixon added: “Hints of high pressure building from the south west will, on Sunday and through to the start of the week, settle the UK’s weather down again and bring a fair degree of dry, fine weather with patchy clouds at times, but also some sunshine as we move through to the start of next week.”
