Punjab to introduce QR codes for online gun licence verification

Listen to article

Punjab’s Home Department has directed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to introduce QR codes for online verification of all gun licences, in a move aimed at curbing illegal weapons.

Law enforcement agencies will be able to scan the QR codes to instantly verify the authenticity of gun licences. The initiative is expected to improve transparency and prevent misuse.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary, with senior officials including Special Secretary Fazal Rehman and Additional Secretary Imran Hussain Ranjha in attendance.

NADRA has been given one week to implement the system. Authorities have also ordered that all gun licences be linked to the holder’s national identity card.

The directive applies to all commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab, ensuring that every licence order includes a QR code.

Punjab’s Home Secretary said the new system would help eliminate fake licences and ensure that gun ownership remains within legal bounds.

“Individuals involved in serious crimes will be ineligible for gun licences,” he said. “We are also making amendments to arms rules to simplify the process for law-abiding citizens and businesses.”

Authorities are also working on revising the fee structure for obtaining and renewing gun licences. The Directorate of Monitoring will oversee the verification process to enhance oversight.
