Punjab to introduce ration card scheme for 1.5 million workers
The Punjab government has approved a new Ration Card Scheme aimed at providing financial support to 1.5 million laborer’s and daily wage earners across the province, officials said on Thursday.
In a recent cabinet meeting held in Lahore and led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab government approved a new plan to support low-income workers. Under this scheme, eligible workers will receive a monthly payment of Rs 10,000. The goal is to reduce financial stress on struggling households.
This new ration card program is part of a larger group of reforms approved during the meeting. One of the changes includes a rule that requires flour mills to buy at least 25% of their wheat from officially regulated sources.
The cabinet also made updates to the Punjab Consumer Protection Act. Now, Additional Session Judges will be allowed to act as Consumer Court authorities, which will strengthen legal protection for consumer rights.
This ration scheme comes shortly after the launch of another major initiative—the SMART Environment Protection Force. This new force uses modern tools like mobile labs, drones, and real-time air quality monitors to fight pollution and make sure environmental rules are followed. Both programs show the government’s focus on helping people and protecting the environment.
The two schemes highlight the Punjab government’s multi-sector approach to reform and welfare, focusing both on economic inclusion and environmental sustainability.
