A powerful earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted various parts of the country during the early hours between Tuesday and Wednesday, causing widespread alarm among residents.
Tremors were felt across several cities, including Lahore and its surrounding areas, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Swabi, Dir, Swat, Malakand, and Chitral. The quake also shook Peshawar, Malakand, Abbottabad and Battagram.
The earthquake struck at 4:13 AM local time. Its intensity was significant enough to awaken people from their sleep, prompting many to rush outdoors in a state of panic.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, with a magnitude of 5.6 and a depth of 69 kilometres. The epicentre was located approximately 108 kilometres east of Kulfgan in Afghanistan.
Tremors were also reported in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province, as well as parts of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The tremors caused widespread fear and anxiety, with many people seen reciting religious verses as they moved towards open spaces for safety.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. However, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Rescue and emergency services have been placed on high alert, and relevant departments have been instructed to implement precautionary measures in anticipation of potential aftershocks.
In a recent seismic event, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad and several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Shangla, and Swat, on March 27, 2025. The tremors, originating from the border area between Afghanistan and Tajikistan at a depth of 198 kilometers, caused widespread panic among residents. Fortunately, no casualties or significant property damage were reported.
