LAHORE:
Following the tragic Jaffer Express incident, Pakistan Railways (PR) has heightened security at all stations and railway installations, including its headquarters. The PR police personnel have intensified security checks, thoroughly inspecting passengers and all entry and exit points at railway stations nationwide.
According to Railway police sources, the department faces a severe shortage of manpower, weapons, and other essential equipment. Despite these challenges, officers continue to perform their duties under difficult circumstances. Security patrols have been increased at major and minor railway stations across the country, and passengers are only being allowed to board trains after thorough checks.
At Lahore railway station, police officers are stationed at all entry and exit points, closely monitoring passengers with the help of security cameras.
Meanwhile, transport vehicles entering railway stations are also being subjected to stricter inspections. Traffic wardens, along with police and railway police personnel, are actively involved in security operations.
Railway police are currently understaffed, with a shortage of constables, ASIs, and inspectors. To address this issue, the department has completed physical tests, and the recruitment process is set to begin next month. Initially, 200 to 300 personnel will be hired, followed by an additional 500 recruits, for which government approval has already been obtained.
Meanwhile, several train passengers remain apprehensive. They condemned Tuesday’s attack on the Jaffer Express, calling it a cowardly act, but vowed to continue their journeys undeterred. They urged railway authorities to enforce strict baggage screening and adopt modern security technologies to prevent future threats. The Jaffer Express service remains suspended, and railway officials have yet to announce a timeline for its resumption.
