Rapist Brian Thom jailed for 12 years for assaulting two women in Scotland | UK News

A “dangerous” rapist who subjected two women to “horrendous ordeals” has been jailed for 12 years.

Brian Thom was found guilty of 17 charges, including multiple rapes, assaults and abusive behaviour.

Judge Lady Hood said the 37-year-old had “shown little empathy or remorse”, even as one of the women spoke “powerfully” in a victim impact statement of the “long-standing impact” of his actions.

She noted how the women gave evidence about Thom exerted control over them.

Thom was said to have nine groups of previous convictions, some of which landed him in jail.

Lady Hood added: “The drivers of your behaviour appear to be your insecurities when you are disinhibited by alcohol or drugs.”

The offences took place between 2007 and 2021 in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire and Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire.

Thom denied any wrongdoing but was found guilty last August following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

He was handed an extended sentence when he returned to the dock on Monday, with 12 years in jail and seven years on licence once released back into the community.

In addition, he was also placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and banned from contacting his victims for an indeterminate period.

Detective Inspector Gary Smillie said: “Thom is a dangerous, violent man who subjected these women to horrendous ordeals. He now faces a lengthy period in prison as a result.

“I would like to commend the women for their strength in coming forward to report his offending and throughout the legal process.

“I hope this conclusion will help them as they move forward with their lives.”
