On Monday, actor Hina Khawaja Bayat shared a heartwarming video on her Instagram, capturing a spontaneous dance with a street musician at London’s Leicester Square. The video was captioned with, “For one artist, from another. When a musician recognises you and requests you to join him in his performance,” showcasing Bayat’s joyful engagement with the vibrant street culture of London and reflecting her appreciation for art and music.
However, the post quickly attracted a slew of negative comments from online trolls. Critics accused Bayat of inappropriate behaviour, questioning her actions in a public space. One user commented, “We all admire your work and decency sister, and many people are inspired by you. You should avoid this kind of activity during Ramazan. May Allah guide us all to the right path. Ameen.”
Another Instagram user wrote a long comment, stating, “I have been a big fan. I love how vocal you are about things and how you know how to call a spade a spade. I am not even bothered by your video. However, one comment caught my attention where you have mentioned Allah hasn’t prohibited us from enjoying life. Allah has clearly prohibited us from music and dancing.”
In response to the backlash, Bayat took to the comments section to address the negativity head-on. She wrote, “I agree that this life is simply a transitory temporary one but Allah has also told us to be grateful for all His bounties, blessings and to partake of them. It is not music and dancing that is prohibited but music that creates ‘haijaan’ where we lose our senses and self control, music that is vulgar and promotes vulgarity. Allah has given us guidelines. We need to ponder and reflect and be grateful for the little moments of happiness He bestows upon us. Nothing compares to the rewards of our eternal life and we strive towards that while we go through this one.”
Another detractor replied to Omair Rana’s comment with, “Please don’t say Mashallah about her dance.” To this, Bayat replied, “He’s saying Mashallah about my happiness. Please stay happy and let others stay happy, too.”
This incident is not the first time Bayat has found herself amidst controversy. More recently in January, Bayat faced backlash after commenting on a video of actors Hania Aamir and Yashma Gill dancing at a wedding. She wrote, “I was wondering if people have forgotten something called a kameez,” implying criticism of their attire. This led to a public reprimand from former Sindh Assembly member Sharmila Faruqui, who urged Bayat to “stop judging women with their choice in clothing.” Despite these controversies, Bayat continues to stand by her beliefs, engaging openly with her audience and addressing criticisms directly.
