Supermarket giant announces plans to open first of its kind high street clothing store in DAYS

SHOPPERS are in for a treat with a brand new high street clothing store opening in just days.

Asda has revealed it’s trialling a brand new George stand-alone store – the first of its kind – which could roll out across the UK if it’s a hit.

The first shop will open in Leeds, where Asda has shut its Crown Point Retail Park Asda Living store to make way for the transformation.

The new-look store will throw open its doors at 9am on Saturday, May 10, with a fresh layout showcasing the very best of George fashion, homeware, toys and baby essentials – plus a new café.

There are 30 Asda Living stores in total and Asda will be making the decision later this year following another store trial.

Fashion fans can snap up the latest looks from the George Spring/Summer 2025 collection, fronted by supermodel Yasmin Le Bon, alongside new celeb collaborations including a stylish kidswear range by Erica Davies and a sunny new drop from Billie Faiers.

The shopping experience is being given a full overhaul too, with quicker checkouts, more self-serve tills, and a simpler Click & Collect service.

And if all that shopping works up an appetite, visitors can tuck into hot and cold dishes – including fresh pizzas – at Asda’s latest Kitchen eatery.

Liz Evans, Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer for George and Retail, said:

“Our Asda Living stores have been a huge success – but as shopping habits change, we want to make it even easier for customers to enjoy quality, style and value with George at the heart of it.”

The George brand first launched in 1989 when fashion guru George Davies teamed up with Asda to create the UK’s first-ever supermarket fashion label.

By 2004, Asda was Britain’s biggest clothing retailer, expanding into homeware with its first Asda Living store.

Inside new upgraded Asda stores

Inside the George Home section, customers will find a brand new range of interiors, garden gear and lifestyle must-haves – including the launch of the At Home with Stacey Solomon Spring/Summer collection.

Today, 35 years later, George is still going strong in 560 stores across the UK and racks up 260 million visits a year to George.com.

It was revealed last week that Asda is looking to grow its offering of smaller stores in order to cater for shoppers residing in city centres and towns.

Asda is planning to open its new Express stores between June and Christmas 2025.

It represents just one area of the retailer’s push to return to its former glory after its sales fell by five per cent in February 2023.

The supermarket’s wider market share has also shrunk over the past few years as it competes with renowned budget shops like Aldi.

Asda looks to compete with Sainsbury’s and Tesco – which currently hold the biggest market share of supermarkets in the UK.

In other retail news, six Homebase stores will reopen as branches of The Range in days as part of a rescue deal.

The DIY and homeware chain entered into administration in November but was partially rescued by billionaire Chris Dwason, owner of CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range and Wilko.

The good news comes as other retailers, both independent and industry giants, continue to struggle.

Just a few months in to 2025 and it’s already proving to be another tough year for many major brands.

Rising living costs – which mean shoppers have less cash to burn – and an increase in online shopping has battered retail in recent years.

In some cases, landlords are either unwilling or unable to invest in keeping shops open, further speeding up the closures.

How to save money at Asda

It’s worth signing up to the Asda Rewards scheme to save money at the supermarket.

The loyalty scheme, which is free to join, lets you earn Cashpot points by completing “missions” like hitting spending targets or buying products in certain categories.

You can also earn cashback by buying “star” products.

If you’re a regular shopper and often go for Asda’s premium lines, it’s worth taking on the “downshifting” challenge, too.

This means going for budget lines instead, which could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your shopping.

It’s worth joining specific Facebook groups where shoppers flag bargain deals they’ve found online or in-store.

Two worth checking are the Latest Deals Facebook Group and the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group.

The Sun revealed earlier this year the best time to score deals at Asda is once in the morning and again in the evening.

Look out for fresh produce like fruit and veg, often reduced to as low as 10p, especially during the morning reductions.

Check the reduced shelf throughout the day as different times can offer varying discounts.

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.
