Tesla Cybertruck deliveries delayed due to trim issues, recalls and production delays

Listen to article

Deliveries of the Tesla Cybertruck are reportedly on hold as the company works to resolve an issue with the vehicle’s trim. According to Electrek, Tesla has initiated a “containment hold” on some trucks due to concerns that the decorative trim, known as the cantrail, is detaching and flying off. Service representatives informed customers awaiting delivery that their trucks would be delayed, but they were not explicitly told the reason for the hold.

A “containment hold” is a proactive measure taken by automakers to address a quality issue or defect before vehicles are delivered to customers. In this case, Tesla has reportedly communicated to some customers that the problem is linked to the cantrail trim, which covers the roof ledge above the door.

The severity of the issue may result in a delay of several weeks, depending on how widespread the problem is.

The trim issue has been raised in previous complaints to the federal government, with some reports suggesting that the cantrail trim is attached using glue, which may not be holding as intended. A YouTube video from over a month ago delves into the specifics of the trim problem, further drawing attention to quality concerns with the Cybertruck. This is not the first time the vehicle has faced issues related to its trim. Last summer, Tesla recalled over 11,000 trucks due to problems with “improperly adhered trunk bed trim sail appliques.”

Since the official launch of the Cybertruck in December 2023, the vehicle has been recalled seven times. Despite these issues, Tesla sold an estimated 40,000 Cybertrucks in 2024, though it still has over 1 million reservations. Reports suggest that some Cybertrucks are piling up on used car lots, and production delays have occurred, with factory workers in Austin told to stay home for three days in December.

The vehicle has also become a target for graffiti and vandalism due to Elon Musk’s controversial role as a special advisor to the Trump administration, adding to the truck’s challenges.
