In the latest instalment of the Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, actor Renée Zellweger reprises her iconic role, bringing both new narratives and a wardrobe filled with nostalgic easter eggs that pay homage to the character’s journey over the years.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, costume designer Molly Emma Rowe meticulously curated Bridget’s outfits to reflect her enduring personality while acknowledging her growth. One notable inclusion is Bridget’s red penguin pajamas, a fan favourite from earlier films.
According to the publication, Rowe said she faced challenges in sourcing the original pair and opted to recreate them, ensuring they appeared authentically worn to signify Bridget’s long-term attachment. She remarked, “Who knows where [the originals] are, but Renée and I were like, ‘She’s been laundering them for like 20 years.'”
Another subtle nod is the reappearance of Bridget’s sheer top, reminiscent of a memorable scene with Daniel Cleaver in the first film. While Bridget considers wearing it for a date in the latest offering, she ultimately decides against it, symbolising her personal evolution.
The film thoughtfully integrates the memory of Bridget’s late husband, Mark Darcy, through her clothing choices. She dons pieces that reflect his presence in her life, including a cosy grey sweater. Rowe shared, “I had his initials monogrammed on it. We actually did try some of Colin’s shirts from the archive, but because he’s so tall and she’s so tiny, it was just a little too much.”
The film also revisits significant locations from Bridget’s past. A poignant scene unfolds when the character’s date takes her to a “lovely little place,” which turns out to be her former flat in Borough Market, now transformed into a bar and serving as a bridge between her past and present.
Zellweger’s deep understanding of Bridget significantly influenced the authenticity of the character’s portrayal. Rowe emphasised the collaborative nature of their work, stating, “Renée is one of the greatest actors of our time… and she’s very sure who Bridget is.” This partnership ensured that Bridget’s essence remained intact while allowing for character development that resonates with long-time fans.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy seamlessly weaves past and present through thoughtful wardrobe choices and settings, offering fans a heartfelt journey that honours the character’s legacy. Zellweger’s reprisal, combined with Rowe’s attentive costume design, creates a cinematic experience rich with nostalgia and new beginnings. The film is available for streaming on Peacock.
