Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun recognised as the world’s oldest person, died at the age of 116, according to her religious congregation.
The Congregation of Teresian Sisters of Brazil announced her death in a statement, praising her life of “dedication and devotion.”
Lucas had lived in the southern city of Porto Alegre.
Born on June 8, 1908, she became the world’s oldest person earlier this year following the death of Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, who also died at age 116.
The title now passes to Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old woman living in Surrey, England, according to the US-based Gerontological Research Group (GRG) and the LongeviQuest database.
LongeviQuest noted that Lucas attributed her longevity to faith in God. On her 110th birthday, she received a special blessing from Pope Francis, who died last week at age 88.
Although Lucas had long claimed she was born on May 27, 1908, official records confirm her date of birth as June 8, 1908, according to GRG director Robert Young.
