Bayern Munich have been dealt a major blow as Alphonso Davies has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee.
The Canadian full-back sustained the injury during Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League. He was substituted in the 12th minute and later underwent tests in Munich, confirming the severe injury.
Davies, 24, is set to undergo surgery today and is expected to be sidelined for around six months.
The Bundesliga giants also confirmed that defender Dayot Upamecano will miss several weeks due to loose joint bodies in his left knee.
The French international helped his side qualify for the UEFA Nations League Final Four after a penalty shootout win over Croatia but returned with fitness concerns.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl acknowledged the impact of the injuries, stating:
“International breaks always pose a risk for injuries, and this time, we have been hit particularly hard. Losing Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano is a huge setback. Phonzy will receive all the support he needs on his road to recovery, and we will also closely monitor Upa’s rehabilitation. Our squad is strong, and we will pull together to compensate for their absence.”
Davies’ injury rules him out for the remainder of the season, with Bayern still competing in the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup.
His absence leaves Vincent Kompany with limited options at left-back, with Hiroki Ito, Raphaël Guerreiro, and Josip Stanišić as potential replacements. However, none possess the attacking threat and pace of the Canadian international.
Davies had recently signed a contract extension until 2030, reportedly earning €15 million per season, plus bonuses. His absence is a significant blow for Bayern as they aim for silverware across multiple competitions.
