THERE’S nothing more satisfying than restoring an old car in need of love to its former glory.
And if you are someone who loves a fix-up project, then you might find your next at this upcoming auction.
Four “garage find” motors are going under the hammer in Birmingham later this month – and all are crying out for some TLC.
They are passing through Iconic Auctioneers at the Classic Car and Restoration Show, hosted at the National Exhibition Centre on March 22 and 23.
Gary Dunne, sales manager at the auction house, said there is “huge pleasure to be had” in doing up these neglected machines – which have mouldered in garages for decades.
The four cars have spent an estimated combined 40 years locked up.
Here’s some information about each of them.
1974 Aston Martin V8 Series 3
This classic Aston Martin has been in storage since 2012, and is estimated to go for £25,000-£30,000.
It’s been in the same hands for 28 years – but spent the last 13 of those stashed away, according to its MOT history.
Despite being over 50 years old, the V8 has clocked up just 50,580 miles.
The Series 3, which first hit the roads in 1973, is set apart from earlier models by its four twin-choke downdraft Weber carburettors – replacing the previous Bosch fuel-injection system.
1971 Lotus Seven S4 Twin-Cam
For a more modest sum of £8,000-£12,000, you could nab this bright yellow Lotus.
It spent around 7 years in a lock-up, after many more whizzing its owner around the hill climb circuit.
The Series 4 sports a wider body than earlier Lotuses, and optionally came with a twin-cam engine.
This particular specimen was bought in 1982 by the seller’s late husband, who cherished it for over three decades.
1992 Land Rover Defender 110 – ex-Camel Trophy 1993
This early ’90s version of a British classic is also up for grabs.
It’s been in storage since 2017, after 20 years of hard graft as a family motor.
The beast was bought with just 2,000 miles on the clock, but has since notched up another 100,000.
The motor also has a serious achievement to its name.
It completed the 1993 Camel Trophy in Sabah, Malaysia – an annual gruelling off-road race.
The Defender is chalked to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000.
1984 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection
This dusty Ford Carpi has perhaps the most interesting backstory of the four.
Its seller purchased the car around 12 years ago and splashed a good deal fixing it up.
They were then hit with the unwelcome news that it had previously been stolen.
After some negotiation with the victim of the car theft, the Ford was legally passed on to the new owner.
This sporty coupe has become something of a collector’s item, so looks like it could be a steal under the £8,000-£10,000 estimate.
