Heartstopper fans had been growing a little antsy over Netflix’s lack of updates about whether the award-winning show would be returning to our screens in the future.
Season three of the much-loved teen drama began streaming last year, with Alice Oseman – who penned the original graphic novels on which Heartstopper is based, as well as writing the TV series – claiming they always envisaged the project as a four-season arc.
In the last few months, speculation was rife about the future of Heartstopper, with Netflix finally offering some concrete news on Tuesday.
So, is Heartstopper getting a season 4 at Netflix?
No. But don’t worry, it’s not the bad news you might have feared.
Instead, Heartstopper will say goodbye with a feature-length film, rather than one last season of the teen show.
Alice Oseman enthused: “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
What else do we know about the Heartstopper movie?
Well, Kit Connor and Joe Locke will both be back for one last outing as Nick and Charlie, whose love story has been capturing viewers’ hearts since season one premiered in 2022.
An official synopsis teases that the central characters’ relationship will be tested as Nick – who is a year older than his boyfriend – prepares to leave for university, while Charlie stays behind at school.
“Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them,” the synopsis reads.
“Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet.”
The announcement also alludes to the pair’s extended friendship group, meaning we should expect appearances from the likes of Yasmin Finney, William Gao and Tobie Donovan when Heartstopper returns.
“Meanwhile, [Nick and Charlie’s] friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?” the synopsis teases.
Production on the final chapter in the Heartstopper journey is slated to get underway this summer.
