A 19-year-old student from Meruvambayi in Kannur, India has died due to anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder characterised by an intense fear of gaining weight, local media reported on Monday.
Sreenanda, a first-year degree student at Pazhassiraja NSS College in Mattannur, had been under treatment at Thalassery Cooperative Hospital for 10 days before her death on Saturday.
Sreenanda had been on ventilator support for the past four days after her condition worsened. Relatives revealed that she had been avoiding food for over a year, worried about gaining weight.
Dr Nagesh Prabhu, who treated her at Thalassery Cooperative Hospital, explained that when Sreenanda arrived, her blood pressure and pulse were very weak, and her blood sugar levels were dangerously low at 40-50.
Her electrolyte levels were also significantly reduced, and internal organ damage, including to the stomach and intestines, had occurred due to severe food deprivation.
Dr Prabhu emphasised the mental health aspect of her condition, noting that although her situation had a psychiatric component, it was too late for psychiatric intervention by the time she was admitted.
He further mentioned that Sreenanda was bedridden on arrival, and while her exact weight couldn’t be assessed, it was clear that she was severely underweight.
