Violent clashes broke out in the town of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, India, on Sunday, following celebrations of India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy final. The incident, which involved stone-pelting and arson, led to several vehicles being torched and businesses vandalised.

The violence erupted during a celebratory rally held by a group of cricket enthusiasts in the town, located approximately 25 kilometres from Indore. As the procession approached the Jama Masjid area, tensions rose when some participants allegedly lit firecrackers outside the mosque, triggering a confrontation between two groups.

Reports suggest that stone-pelting escalated quickly, leading to further violence. Several motorcycles were set on fire, and a local shop was torched. Video footage from the scene showed police in riot gear and damaged cars and buildings scattered across the area.

Authorities responded swiftly, deploying tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the crowds. A heavy police presence has been maintained in the town, and the situation was later reported to be under control.

At least three people were reported injured during the clashes, though the exact number remains unclear.

“We are investigating the cause of the clashes and taking necessary actions,” said Hitika Vasal, Senior Police Officer. “We are currently patrolling sensitive areas, and the situation is under control.”

Authorities have confirmed that 13 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, with further arrests anticipated. Investigators are reviewing video footage to identify additional suspects, particularly those responsible for throwing stones and petrol bombs.

The violence marred what was otherwise a joyous celebration of India’s win in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where they defeated New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final. Cricket fans across the country had been rejoicing in the streets, waving flags and dancing in celebration.

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district police have launched an investigation into the clashes. Local police have vowed to take strict action against the rioters involved.

“The investigation is ongoing,” said Ashish Singh, Indore District Collector. “We are ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.”

Authorities are also reviewing how the situation escalated, particularly regarding the handling of the procession and the alleged actions taken by both groups involved.
