Kiran Rao says her parents were ‘Shocked’ by her marriage to Aamir Khan

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan married director Kiran Rao in 2005. However, after 16 years together, they surprised many by announcing their separation in 2021. Recently, Kiran revealed that her parents were “shocked” when she expressed her desire to marry Aamir. They believed she had big aspirations and feared his persona might overshadow her.

In an interview, Kiran Rao revealed that her wedding to Aamir Khan shocked her family. She said, “It was a shocker for them. They were taken aback. In their eyes, I had a lot of promise. I was someone who wanted to do a lot of things.” She added that they worried Aamir’s influence might overshadow her aspirations.

The “Laapataa Ladies” director further revealed that Aamir Khan never imposed any expectations on her. She added that he has always supported her and felt happy for her being herself.

She also praised the actor’s family for their incredible warmth and shared how their relationships evolved naturally. She added that once people get to know the family, they form strong bonds because the family accepts individuals for who they are rather than just their roles.

Kiran further discussed the challenge of being overshadowed by marrying someone famous and revealed that she took time to rediscover her voice, both publicly and personally. However, she admitted that Aamir gave her the space to grow, which gave her the courage to embrace her individuality while still cherishing their bond and family.

Despite their separation, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan continue to maintain a strong personal and professional bond. She emphasized how they collaborate creatively, showcasing their mutual maturity in navigating challenges. She added, “Aamir and I will always be there for each other.”
