Tropical cyclone threat grows as heavy rainfall hits northern Australia

Meteorologists are warning of increasing tropical cyclone potential near northern Australia this week as a monsoonal surge and an active Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) bring heavy rainfall and unstable weather conditions to the region.

Weather Systems Strengthening Over Northern Australia
A strong burst of monsoonal winds sweeping across the Maritime Continent is expected to inject moisture-laden air into the tropics near Australia, leading to widespread rainfall and creating favorable conditions for cyclone formation.

According to weather models, the most significant rainfall over the next seven days will be concentrated in northern Queensland early in the week. However, heavy tropical rain is also forecast to spread across parts of the Northern Territory (NT) and northern Western Australia (WA) later in the week.

Two developing low-pressure systems:

Meteorologists are closely monitoring two low-pressure systems to the northwest of Australia, both of which have potential to develop into tropical cyclones in the coming days.

  1. Cocos (Keeling) Islands System
  • A tropical low is forming near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology gives this system a moderate chance of developing into a tropical cyclone by Thursday.
  • Forecasts indicate it will likely remain away from the Australian mainland over the coming week.

2. Northwest of WA’s Pilbara Coast

  • Another low-pressure system is expected to form off the northwest coast of WA around Friday.
  • Currently, this system has only a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next seven days.
  • However, early indications suggest it could bring impacts to northern WA towards the end of the week, though forecasters say it is too early to predict its exact path and strength.

Authorities urge residents to stay alert
With the potential for severe weather in the coming days, meteorologists are advising residents in northern Australia to stay informed on the latest weather and flood warnings.
