THE Met Office has warned of a -5C Arctic chill with ice, hail, and snow on its way to cause travel chaos.
Showers are set to continue until this evening with intermittent sleet and hail forecast.
The Met Office said: “Showers will continue at times through Wednesday and Wednesday night, these falling as sleet or hail at times, and perhaps temporarily as snow over hills.
“Clear spells in between will allow temperatures to fall close to zero, with some untreated surfaces turning icy later tonight and at first on Thursday, especially over the Pennines and Peak District.”

Those Sheffield and Leeds have been urged to leave the house five minutes earlier than usual so as not to rush on slippery roads.
This applies to residents in the Pennines and Peak District where there may be travel delays due to the cold snap.
The Met Office added: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.”
In areas not covered by the weather warning, the frost is set to clear leaving another chilly but sunny day.
Central, eastern and far northern parts of the UK might feel a bit wintry over high ground, especially after the weekend that has just been.
Tomorrow the sunshine should continue, albeit shining over a slightly chilly Britain, with showery rain clearing southwards.
As we roll into the weekend it might be time to get the heating back on as an overnight fog and frost could bring a bitter chill.
Yesterday there was even a prediction for snow across many regions as temperatures continue to drop from highs of 19C seen last weekend.
A yellow weather warning for ice was issued by the forecaster for parts of northern England on Thursday.
Parts of the Peak District might also experience snowfall, although rain is expected in the region.
Snow is expected to continue to fall in the Highlands area from today well into Thursday morning.
This follows a beautiful weekend where Brits were spotted sporting T-shirts and shorts across the country.

Parts of the UK reached a balmy 20C with a welcomed change from the Winter blues.
Brighton and Portobello beaches were packed with people with their swimmers on, ready for the first dip of Spring.
