WhatsApp is set to introduce voice and video calling to its web client, expanding functionality beyond messaging for users who prefer using the app in a browser. The new feature, currently in development, is expected to roll out in a future update.
The discovery was made in a recent beta version of WhatsApp Web and reported by WABetaInfo, a platform known for tracking WhatsApp developments.
The update will allow users to make both individual and group calls directly from browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge—removing the need to download WhatsApp’s dedicated desktop app for Windows or macOS.
Since launching its native desktop calling feature in 2021, WhatsApp had limited web browser users to messaging and media sharing.
The inability to initiate or receive calls from the browser has remained a notable limitation for users, particularly those relying on web access at work or while travelling.
This upcoming capability is part of a broader shift by parent company Meta to create a more cohesive and flexible user experience across platforms.
It mirrors the calling functionality already present in Meta’s Messenger web client and aligns with a growing need for seamless communication tools amid the rise of remote and hybrid work environments.
To use the feature, users will need to grant their browser access to a microphone and webcam. According to early findings, permissions will likely persist across sessions unless cookies or site data are cleared, although WhatsApp may also offer per-visit permission settings.
Although the exact launch date remains unconfirmed, the beta integration indicates that public release may not be far off.
The update is expected to make it easier for users to transition between devices and to set up WhatsApp on new desktops without installing additional software.
The move follows recent improvements to WhatsApp Web’s interface, which now closely resembles its Android app layout, and comes shortly after the release of a new Advanced Chat Privacy feature aimed at securing users’ conversations.
WhatsApp’s push to unify its platform across devices highlights Meta’s long-term strategy to enhance usability while maintaining end-to-end encryption and privacy standards.
